63 Seconds Left in the Game. Then Everything Became About the Athlete.

There were just 63 seconds remaining in Friday night’s football game between Haskell and Anson when the focus suddenly shifted away from the scoreboard.

Haskell sophomore Matthew Williams was injured during a tackle near the sideline and was unable to stand afterward.

That’s when the medical response began.

According to the Abilene Reporter-News, Athletic Trainers from both schools responded to Williams on the field, along with other medical personnel. An ambulance was already stationed behind the end zone and was brought onto the field as Williams was secured to a backboard and moved onto a stretcher.

EMS ultimately determined that Williams needed to be transported by air. He was flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene and later transferred to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. The teams agreed not to play the final 63 seconds.

Fortunately, Haskell Athletics later shared that Williams had returned home and was resting and healing. The school thanked the EMTs, Athletic Trainer, coaches and others who supported Williams and his family.

For Athletic Trainers, it’s a reminder of what all those emergency plans, conversations and preparations are ultimately for.

You never know when an ordinary Friday night will become something very different.

And when it does, the game stops mattering. The athlete becomes the priority.
