A Love for the Game Turned Into a Career of Care

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

Over the years, women have continued to carve out space across the sports industry, from the sidelines to leadership roles. Their influence is reshaping how athletes are cared for and how future professionals envision their careers. At Wheeling Park High School, one Athletic Trainer’s journey reflects that growing impact.

A collegiate basketball player at Marietta College, Duritza initially planned to become a physician assistant. But an injury during her senior year led to a career-defining conversation with her own Athletic Trainer.

“She was like, ‘Why don’t you become an athletic trainer? We’re starting this master’s program. I think you would really fit in,’” Duritza said. “To me, it was the best of both worlds. I get to be around sports, I get to be on the sidelines, and I get to help people.”

Taking a leap of faith, Duritza enrolled in graduate school to pursue athletic training. Along the way, the Athletic Trainer who once helped guide her recovery became a mentor—challenging her, supporting her, and pushing her to succeed. She also credits her high school Athletic Trainer as another influential role model, shaping the standard she now strives to meet.

Now working at Wheeling Park High School, Duritza understands the responsibility that comes with her role.

“I think it’s really important to be one of those influential people, especially to the kids that I have here,” she said. “They’re seeing a strong, independent, younger woman in a high place and doing really cool things.”

For Duritza, success is found in the small moments.

“I actually keep a list of all my influential patients and what they taught me,” she said. “Even the littlest things can matter to people most.”

Her advice to others reflects that same perspective.

“Network early, smile often, and shoot for the stars,” Duritza said. “It’s hard work, but it definitely pays off.”

Through dedication, mentorship, and compassion, Alliya Duritza continues to prove that her hard work—and the paths she’s creating—are making a lasting difference. Check out the full story here!
