After more than four decades dedicated to the health and well-being of athletes, longtime Athletic Trainer John Kasik is stepping away from the profession—leaving behind a legacy that spans generations.

Along the way, he built a reputation not just for his clinical expertise, but for the relationships he formed with athletes and colleagues.

“I’ve loved what I’ve done for 45 years,” Kasik said. “We are in the people business… taking care of student-athletes is what keeps you going.”

Kasik’s journey began in 1979 with the Baltimore Colts and eventually included 22 years in the NFL, working with organizations like the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. Later, he transitioned into collegiate athletics, where the scope of care—and number of athletes—expanded dramatically.

“Athletic trainers work hard,” he said. “There was no down time.”

Throughout his career, Kasik embraced that demand, helping grow South Carolina’s sports medicine program into a stable, respected operation. Colleagues credit his leadership, quick decision-making, and compassion as defining traits.

“His impact and the standard he leaves behind are remarkable,” said Deputy Athletics Director Judy Van Horn.

Now, Kasik looks forward to spending time with family and stepping away from the daily grind. Still, like many in the profession, he knows exactly what he’ll miss most.

“The people… and the daily interactions,” he said.

For Athletic Trainers, Kasik’s career is a reminder that while the work is demanding, the impact lasts far beyond the field. Check out the full story here
