'Always There on the Worst Day': Spotlight on Athletic Trainer Tyler Konopka

If you don’t notice the Athletic Trainer during a game, that’s usually a good thing.

For Tyler Konopka, the Athletic Trainer at Nantucket High School, that’s part of the job.

“We're always there on an athlete's worst day,” Konopka said. “You're the main person on the field when a kid is in tears.”

While athletes, coaches, and fans focus on the action, Konopka works behind the scenes—until the moment everything changes. Whether it’s a sudden injury or a high-stress situation, he knows he has to be ready at all times.

“If you're not ready to deal with that whole situation… kids can sense it,” he said. “I need to be prepared for anything.”

His days reflect that reality. Starting early in the morning and often ending late at night, Konopka handles everything from paperwork and communication to taping, treatments, and sideline coverage.

On an island where many road opponents don’t have Athletic Trainers, preparation becomes even more critical.

But beyond the long hours, it’s the relationships that matter most. Konopka emphasizes building trust with athletes and coaches, knowing he’ll be the first face they see in difficult moments.

Outside the traditional role, he’s also found a way to bring visibility to the profession through social media as “Trainer Ty,” using humor to show a side of Athletic Training many don’t see.

At its core, his work is simple—be ready, be steady, and be there when it matters most. Read his full spotlight story here
