AT Devens: Elevating NYU Athletics Through Care and Dedication

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesAt the heart of NYU Athletics is a community of professionals dedicated to supporting student-athletes, and leading that charge is Matthew Devens.

Matthew DevensAffectionately known as “Matty Devs,” Devens is the Head Athletic Trainer and assistant athletic director for sports medicine, roles he’s held since May.

His decade-long career at NYU, starting in 2014, has been marked by his unwavering commitment to athletes’ health and well-being.

Devens’ impact is felt across the athletics department, with student-athletes crediting him for NYU Athletics’ recent successes.

“We see them through every practice, every game, and every injury,” Devens said. “The rewarding thing for us is watching them come back and perform at a high level again.”

His care extends beyond physical injuries to mental health, ensuring athletes have access to the resources they need.

Currently pursuing a master’s in health administration, Devens values continuous education to provide top-notch care. He works primarily with the cross country, women’s basketball, and men’s soccer teams, meeting every player when they join as first-years.

His pride in his athletes, especially the NCAA champion women’s basketball team, is evident during games.

“He takes a person-first approach,” said head strength coach Brett Longobucco. “He cares about them as people and asks how he can help them achieve their goals.”

Balancing work and family, Devens often has his daughters at games, further emphasizing his role as a mentor and role model.

“The hardest part is being away from family, but their support means everything."

With new facilities and a clear vision, Devens is confident in the department’s future.

“We can reignite our heart and common grounds as athletes in the athletic department.”

Under his leadership, NYU Athletics is poised for even greater success. Discover more here
