Athletic Trainer and Student Quick Action Saved Life on the Basketball Court

On a regular training evening at Missouri S&T, a life-threatening situation unfolded, leading to an extraordinary act of heroism that saved a student's life.

During a basketball officiating training session on January 16, a student suddenly collapsed due to cardiac arrest.

Lucas Stone, a senior engineering management student, and Lance Ringhausen, Head Athletic Trainer, sprang into action, performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to stabilize the student until emergency services arrived.

Lucas Stone, who had been trained in CPR and AED use through the university's free program, was pivotal in initiating the lifesaving measures.

Lance Ringhausen, overseeing the varsity basketball team nearby, assisted with AED shocks, complementing Stone's efforts. Their quick response was crucial, and within minutes of their intervention, paramedics arrived, administering further treatment that led to the student's recovery.

For their heroic actions, both Stone and Ringhausen were honored by Doug Roberts, Chief of University Police, at a meeting of the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

They received awards for their exceptional skill and quick thinking that preserved a life. Reflecting the sentiments of the community and underscoring the importance of CPR training in saving lives, Roberts stated:  

"They are heroes to us all, and I am proud to honor them."

This incident not only highlights individual bravery but also the critical impact of readiness and education in emergency responses.
