Behind every standout performance at Connecticut College is a team working quietly behind the scenes—and Athletic Trainer Ivan Asikainen has quickly become one of the most valued members of that group.
A graduate of the University of Rhode Island and the University of Connecticut’s athletic training program, Asikainen discovered early on that he wanted something more dynamic than a traditional clinical setting.
“I wanted to do something more dynamic,” he said. “Athletic training seemed better than solely working in a clinic.”
Now known simply as “Ivan” to many athletes, he balances responsibilities across women’s soccer, cross country, hockey, and track and field, adapting to the unique demands of each season.
“No matter the team… all of my patients have to receive the best care regardless of the season,” Asikainen explained.
Athletes and coworkers alike praise his willingness to go above and beyond. One athlete noted that he spent personal time researching the best return-to-run strategy for her rehab, while colleagues highlighted his constant curiosity and research-driven mindset.
For Asikainen, though, the heart of the profession remains simple.
“The default answer is the people,” he said. “It’s why you pick this profession.”
