Mark Coberley, MS, ATC, LAT, CESC, NASM, PES, CES, with a title resembling a complex code, is much more than just an Athletic Trainer. His numerous certifications are just part of a testament to his expertise and dedication in the field of sports medicine.
Inducted into the National Athletic Trainer Association Hall of Fame, Coberley's journey with Iowa State programs began in 1993. His role, particularly crucial during the football season, extends beyond Saturdays.

The true challenge lies in the extensive preparation and rehabilitation work that occupies the rest of the week, often entailing 12-14 hour days.
Coberley's passion for sports medicine was ignited during a high school summer seminar. This interest led him to Iowa State, where he was mentored by some of the best in the field, culminating in a long and rewarding career.
He's witnessed the evolution of sports medicine firsthand, observing the transition from a small team providing care to a larger, specialized group heavily reliant on science and technology.
Today, Coberley's role resembles that of a hospital administrator, overseeing a team of 30-40 professionals. His focus is on ensuring collaboration and communication across various specialties to maximize athlete health and performance. This professional evolution reflects the broader changes in sports medicine, a field that has grown in complexity and scope.
Beyond his administrative duties, Coberley is deeply connected to his athletes, viewing them as part of his extended family. He finds immense reward in guiding them through recovery, helping them return to their passions.
His educational journey, from a B.S in Biology to an M.S in Athletic Training, and his subsequent roles, including a stint as the Head Athletic Trainer at Sunnyside High School and Wichita State University, shaped his comprehensive understanding of sports medicine.
Coberley’s influence extends into academia as well. Since 1996, he has been a lecturer in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State, teaching courses in sports injury rehabilitation, organizational leadership, and sports medicine program administration.
