Since joining Major League Soccer in 2009, the Seattle Sounders have set a high standard for success, winning four U.S. Open Cups, two MLS Cups, and a historic Concacaf Champions League title.

While players often receive the spotlight, the achievements of the Sounders are also due to the dedicated professionals working behind the scenes. One of these key figures is Head Athletic Trainer Sheila Tatsunami.

VP of Sports Medicine Chris Cornish said:

“She goes above and beyond for everything. The players really, really like her, the coaches trust her, and I obviously trust her and everything she does.”

Tatsunami joined the Sounders in 2013 and has played a crucial role in maintaining players' physical health.

She began at the Academy level, moved on to the Tacoma Defiance as Director of Development Medical, and now serves as a leading member of the First Team medical staff. Cornish added:

“Sheila has been here obviously for a long, long time. Loyalty to the club and her devotion to everything she does is a great aspect that we need at the Sounders.”

Her impact is not limited to physical health. Midfielder Josh Atencio highlighted her support for players' mental health.

“If we're having struggles or anything, she's always willing to listen and talk through things. After every game, she's always talking to me about how well she thought I played. It’s been so nice to have her on both the medical and mental side of things.”

A former collegiate soccer player, Tatsunami understands the stressors of competitive sports. Her passion for soccer and medicine drives her to help players reach their potential.

“My world is about wanting players to reach their goals not only in their rehab but also their career… All my energy is towards the players, and if they're happy, I'm happy.”

Tatsunami also focuses on creating a supportive environment for her staff.

“We have an incredible, talented group, so I want to make sure they stay on that standard.”

Her commitment to the Sounders extends beyond her role.

“I stayed here because I'm very passionate about the players’ growth, health, and wellbeing, and this environment. I've been here for a long time, so [the Sounders] became my family.”

Tatsunami’s dedication and expertise have been integral to the Sounders’ success. As Atencio put it this way:

“I've been super fortunate to have her every step of my journey here.”
