What started as an ordinary day of summer conditioning at a local high school quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency—one that showcased the critical importance of certified Athletic Trainers and coordinated emergency response.

During football sprints under the summer heat, a student-athlete suddenly collapsed on the field. Jeff Wiseman, ATC with Riverside Sports Medicine and the on-site medical professional, sprang into action.

He found the athlete with a faint pulse, irregular breathing, and signs of seizure-like activity. Without hesitation, Jeff began chest compressions and activated the school’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP). A nearby AED was retrieved, 911 was called, and trained coaches joined the coordinated effort.

York County Fire & Safety arrived within minutes, quickly integrating into the emergency response. Together, the group stabilized the student, who was then transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center and later transferred to CHKD’s pediatric cardiology unit for further evaluation.

Thanks to Jeff’s calm leadership, rapid action, and the seamless collaboration with local first responders, the student-athlete is now recovering and expected to make a full return.

“Without the life-saving care that was quickly provided by Jeff and supported by our community partners, the outcome may have been tragic,” said Dr. John Barley, Sports Medicine Physician with Riverside.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder: medical emergencies can happen without warning in youth sports. But with skilled Athletic Trainers, well-rehearsed EAPs, and community-wide preparedness, outcomes can be changed in an instant.
