Carita Mills Named National Athletic Trainer of the Year

At WVU Potomac State College, Athletic Trainer Carita Mills has long been a vital part of student-athlete care. Now, the rest of the country is taking notice.
Mills was named the 2026 National Athletic Trainer of the Year, earning the honor at a national conference in Kansas City.
The award recognizes her dedication to providing comprehensive care for athletes across all sports at Potomac State.
“I was very surprised by the award,” Mills said. “When I found out I had won this national award, I couldn’t believe it.”
As the college’s primary Athletic Trainer, Mills oversees the health and wellness of every athlete on campus—often managing everything from minor concerns to serious injuries on her own.
“Anything related to the health and safety of the athlete is my responsibility,” she said. “I build up trust with the students… sometimes they just want to talk, and I am here for that too.”
Her role extends beyond treatment. Mills also mentors future Athletic Trainers, working with students from Frostburg State University who assist in gaining clinical experience.
Despite frequently working solo and seeing more than 20 athletes daily, Mills says the motivation comes from the athletes themselves.
“Their tuition pays my salary… this could be the health care they are getting,” she said.
After more than a decade in the profession, Mills remains passionate about her work.
“I love what I do… nothing compares to what I do here.”
For Mills, it’s not just a job—it’s a calling rooted in care, connection, and consistency. Read the story here!
