In 2018, the Cleveland Clinic launched its Esports Medicine Program to address these unique injuries. Jason Cruickshank, an Athletic Trainer with the program, explained:
“Esports athletes are not significantly different from traditional athletes... They suffer from repetitive trauma, including tendinitis, shortened muscles, and nerve impingements like carpal tunnel.”
To combat these issues, the clinic promotes movement and injury prevention. Chiropractic physician Drew Schwartz emphasized:
“We focus on movement promotion, addressing muscle imbalances, and incorporating strengthening work and cardio, not just stretching.”
The program has worked with professional teams like Cavs Legion and collegiate teams such as Cleveland State University’s esports program.
P.J. Farrell, director of esports at Cleveland State, said they’ve adopted the clinic’s practices, ensuring athletes stay healthy in both mind and body.
“We’re going to make sure we’re not just playing video games 24/7... we’re doing workouts."
The Cleveland Clinic’s program emphasizes a holistic approach to esports athlete health, ensuring longevity in their careers. More details here!
