Dr. Ginger Gilmore Retires After Decades of Transformative Work at Alabama

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesDr. Ginger Gilmore, a cornerstone of the Alabama athletic department, retired following the Crimson Tide’s final game of the 2024 season against Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31.

Doctor GDr. Gilmore, who joined the program in 1996, has profoundly impacted Alabama athletics by establishing a premier behavioral health program that now supports over 600 athletes annually.

As Assistant Athletic Director of Behavioral Health and Wellness, Dr. Gilmore worked closely with Nick Saban’s football program and expanded mental health resources to all athletic teams.

“Coach [Saban] started this push in ’07 when he arrived,” she shared. “His passion for taking care of student-athletes helped spread these efforts across all sports.”

Reflecting on her career, Dr. Gilmore stated:

“For three decades I’ve had the honor of serving as an Athletic Trainer and director of behavioral medicine at The University of Alabama. My journey comes to an end as we play our final game against Michigan. I will walk off the field for the last time, taking so many incredible memories, experiences, and friendships with me in my heart.”

Before her tenure in Tuscaloosa, Dr. Gilmore began her career at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. At Alabama, she served as the Head Athletic Trainer for women’s basketball and baseball before transitioning into a specialized role with football under Saban’s leadership.

While boasting six national and eight SEC championships, Dr. Gilmore considers her greatest achievements to be helping athletes navigate mental health challenges.

“We’re able to offer resources to all student-athletes, not just football,” she explained.

Dr. Gilmore’s contributions have left an indelible mark on Alabama athletics, ensuring her legacy as a trailblazer in sports mental health and wellness. She now looks forward to a new chapter with "The Bama Standard." Roll Tide Forever!
