Dynamo Expands Sports Med Department to Boost Athlete Care and Performance
The Houston Dynamo Football Club has significantly enhanced its sports medicine department, a move spurred by the arrival of majority owner Ted Segal. This expansion underscores the club's commitment to athlete health, emphasizing injury prevention and optimal performance across all levels, from the first team to the academy.
Currently, the department includes eleven dedicated practitioners, each contributing uniquely to the wellness of athletes competing at Shell Energy Stadium and beyond. As the Club marked National Athletic Trainers Month last month in March, the focus sharpens on these professionals and their indispensable roles with the team.
Craig Devine, director of sports medicine, leads the department with a wealth of experience from his tenure with entities like Columbus Crew and U.S. Figure Skating.
For Devine, last month was not just about recognition but also about "fueling pride and passion for the profession and assisting clinicians to become the best they can be."
The team recently welcomed Wafaa Chatila as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Houston Dash. A Texas native with a robust educational background from TCU and the University of Houston, Chatila sees her role as:
"A selfless profession that allows us the ability to provide the best healthcare to our patients with adaptability, the latest knowledge, and a passion to help others."
Assistant Athletic Trainer Jill Davis, who joined the Dash after four years in college athletics, echoes the sentiment of service, deeming the profession as:
"One of the most service-oriented and important roles within the team environment."
The department's efficacy was highlighted when the medical staff, led by Matt Murphy, was nominated for a league award following the 2023 season. Murphy, who appreciates the holistic approach of athletic training, noted:
"Being able to connect with athletes as people is what brings me the most joy and passion."
Juan Castano, another key member of the staff, stressed the importance of building trust through the bonds formed during the season, which are crucial during the ups and downs of a campaign.
Brandi Neeley, promoted to the first team after a stint with the second team, highlighted the dual role of ATs as caregivers and confidants, providing athletes with a voice in their healthcare.
“Not only do we have the pleasure of helping ensure that those in our care continue to lead healthy and active lives, but we have the privilege of being their confidant, mentor and overall resource in helping them receive the best care possible."
The second team's medical efforts are led by Jennifer Fenwick, who focuses on maintaining athletes at peak health levels. Matt Hutton, another member of the second team's staff, pointed out the multifaceted role of Athletic Trainers in managing injuries, nutrition, hydration, and mental health support.
The Dynamo Academy's medical care is managed by Adrian Guerrero and Ashton Heitz, who guide young athletes through their crucial development phases, preparing them for collegiate or professional sports.
Overall, the expansion of the Houston Dynamo's sports medicine department is a testament to the club's commitment to excellence, ensuring that every athlete receives top-tier medical attention and support, enhancing both performance and career longevity.
