On a crisp August evening in Wisconsin Rapids, Wildcat football player Jack Silloway limped off the field, his senior season cut short by an ACL tear. The injury marked the end of his football career, but the beginning of a journey with River Falls Athletic Trainer Tina Montpetit.
Known as "Tina the Trainer," Montpetit is the Wildcats’ go-to for physical and emotional support.
She emphasized the mental challenges of season-ending injuries.
"I'm usually the first person there when it happens," said Montpetit.
For Silloway, her advice to stay connected to the team was vital.
"She kept telling me to be around the team... I needed their energy," he shared.
Montpetit's impact isn’t limited to football. Volleyball standout Maddy Range credits her for helping overcome the fear of diving after dislocating her shoulder.
"She did visualization exercises with me," said Range. "Whether it was about my injury or life, she's always there for us."
Montpetit’s path to athletic training began after her own high school sports injuries. A New Richmond native, she majored in kinesiology at UW-Eau Claire, gaining experience before returning full-time to River Falls in 2023.
Her days are filled with the sounds of tape tearing and ice scooping, but Montpetit cherishes the personal connections.
“My favorite part of the job is the daily interactions,” she said. "I've been here long enough to be invited to weddings."
Silloway is now focused on returning for track season, with Montpetit cheering him on.
"It’s fun being around her, really fun," he said.
For Tina the Trainer, supporting the Wildcats isn’t just a job.
"This is where I’m supposed to be," she affirmed.
