Goforth joined Virginia Tech in 1998 and immediately began reshaping the sports medicine landscape with his innovative, athlete-centered approach.
Under his leadership, the department adopted comprehensive strategies for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and recovery, significantly enhancing health and safety standards for the Hokies’ student-athletes. Whit Babcock, Tech Director of Athletics:

His approach to sports medicine has not only set new standards within our program but has also influenced collegiate sports medicine across the nation. Throughout his career, Goforth championed collaboration, working alongside medical professionals, sports psychologists, and nutritionists to ensure holistic care.
His efforts minimized injury risks, optimized performance, and expedited recovery, earning him respect and accolades across the collegiate athletics community.

Although retiring from college sports, Goforth looks forward to continuing his passion for teaching, research, and community engagement, solidifying his enduring legacy within Virginia Tech and beyond.
