Golden Tigers Focus on Safety After Player’s Cardiac Arrest

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

As football season kicks off across Pennsylvania, Athletic Trainers are prioritizing safety with new initiatives to prevent catastrophic injuries. For the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers, these measures became urgent after a frightening incident last year.

“We are offering more CPR classes, hands-only classes, not only to our coaches, but our district staff to prepare them for any type of event,” said head Athletic Trainer Amy Smearman. “We took a look at our emergency action plan. It’s a constant work in motion.”

Spencer DavisThe push for change came after then-sophomore Spencer Davis collapsed on the field following a hit to the chest, suffering commotio cordis—a condition that disrupts the heart’s rhythm.

The coaching staff quickly removed his equipment and began chest compressions until Smearman arrived. Davis was transported to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he spent seven days recovering.

“I spent seven days in the Children’s Hospital, and it was really rough the first couple of nights,” Davis recalled. “My mom walked over and she was like, ‘We can do two things. We can make a change, or we can dwell and just do nothing with it.’”

Davis chose change. Since then, he has become a vocal advocate for increased access to AED monitors and CPR training in schools.

“It was my main priority since the first day,” he said. “Making sure more kids are safe and can play the sports that they love.”

Although no longer competing, Davis remains part of the Golden Tigers football program, working alongside Smearman on the sidelines. His presence is a reminder of both the dangers athletes face and the importance of preparation.

“I think the players are just so much more aware of what can happen during a practice or game event,” Smearman said.
