Healing Paws: Queso's Tail-Wagging Support for EWU Student Athletes!

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesOkay, so you know we (like most people) love any story with our furry friends in it! And in the busy athletic training room of Eastern Washington University, there's a unique team member that really  stands out—not only for her friendly demeanor but also for her wagging tail!

QuesoQueso, a 21-month-old Labrador and Golden Retriever mix, serves as a certified therapy dog, bringing comfort and a touch of joy to student athletes undergoing treatment.

Owned by Head Athletic Trainer Hailey Haukeli, Queso became a permanent fixture in the training room after athletes expressed how much they missed her presence.

Initially, Haukeli brought Queso to work during her puppy stage to manage her care, but had to stop due to regulations.

"The athletes became really fond of her and were always asking me where Queso was."

This led to a student-driven initiative, spearheaded by junior tennis player Drew Dillon and a teammate, who advocated for Queso's official role to the administration.

"We never thought she would get the scholarship and the training she deserved, but the administration jumped on board with it and thought she would be a great addition."

Queso's transformation into a therapy dog involved eight months of intensive training at Unleashed Academy in Spokane. Now fully certified, she is a cherished part of the Eagle family.

"She gets to be here every day and make people happy and help our athletes through the day and I think that's the most important thing. Our athletes are people first, and I think we forget that sometimes, so when they come in and see her, and it brightens their day, that helps everybody."

The presence of Queso in the training room not only aids in physical recoveries but also offers emotional relief. Dillon underscored the calming influence Queso has on everyone she meets:

"It's easy to come in and see a little piece of no stress at all."
