Heartsaver Heroes to Be Honored at Game During CPR and AED Awareness Week
Two Texas heroes will be recognized for their lifesaving efforts during the Corpus Christi Hooks baseball game on June 3 as part of CPR and AED Awareness Week, held June 1–7.The American Heart Association will present Heartsaver Hero awards to Calallen Athletic Trainer Alex Benavides and Courtney Gosset, aunt of Gregory-Portland High School senior Quinn Supnet.
On March 1, Supnet collapsed from cardiac arrest following an on-field collision during a baseball tournament.
Benavides and Gosset quickly stepped in to perform CPR, ultimately saving Supnet’s life. He was later diagnosed with commotio cordis, a rare condition caused by blunt impact to the chest.
“They have not only helped save a life within the community, but they are also partnering with the American Heart Association to improve the survival rate of citizens who receive bystander CPR,” said Amy Snell Canterbury, development director for the Heart of Corpus Christi campaign.
Supnet made a full recovery, returned to baseball, and graduated this spring. He plans to study business at the University of Texas at Austin.
In addition to the awards ceremony, Hooks fans will have the opportunity to learn hands-only CPR and AED use. The first 115 trained attendees will receive CPR Anytime® Training Kits, made possible by community sponsors.
“We’re encouraging fans to take the kits home to train friends, neighbors and family members,” said Canterbury.
Each year, over 350,000 Americans suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospitals, with a survival rate of just 10 percent. The Association’s Nation of Lifesavers initiative aims to double survival rates by 2030 through widespread CPR education.
