Throughout her tenure, Rheeling has been pivotal in redefining the role of an Athletic Trainer beyond the sports field, bringing to light the critical medical care they provide.
“It’s important to patients that we’re licensed so that everybody knows what an Athletic Trainer is and what their skill set is — so we’re doing so legally and practicing in their skill set."
Her efforts culminated in the successful hiring of a lobbyist to help write the Practice Act language, allowing Athletic Trainers to fully utilize their skills in D.C., where they are now recognized as licensed healthcare professionals.
Rheeling’s commitment extends beyond legal advocacy. She has been instrumental in emergency situations that include neighborhood violence and injuries, addressing needs that often go beyond the capabilities of school nurses who are not available after hours.
“We’re here if an emergency happens.”
Her proactive approach includes everything from drafting emergency action plans to providing essential sports equipment to underprivileged athletes.
Her career has not only been about managing physical injuries but also offering a support system for the emotional and physical well-being of her students.
This is reflected in her personal touches, like purchasing sports bras for her athletes, showing her deep commitment to their overall health and success.
