When fans discuss the New York Knicks' recent success, most of the conversation centers on players, coaches, and playoff performances. Behind the scenes, however, the organization's athletic training staff has played a major role in helping keep the roster healthy and available throughout the season.

Led by Vice President of Sports Medicine Casey Smith, the Knicks have become one of the NBA's healthiest teams over the past two seasons. Smith joined New York in 2024 after a distinguished career with the Dallas Mavericks and USA Basketball, bringing decades of experience in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and player performance.

The results have been noticeable. Key contributors such as OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns have logged significant minutes while remaining available throughout the season.

The Knicks' commitment to athlete health was recognized when the organization received the 2024-25 NBATA Athletic Training Staff of the Year Award.

Smith's team includes senior Athletic Trainer Heather Mau along with Anthony Goenaga, Noaya Fujii, Ty Yeaton, and Quentin Dolan. Together, they help oversee player health, recovery strategies, workload management, and return-to-play decisions throughout the demanding NBA schedule.

For Athletic Trainers, the Knicks provide another example of how sports medicine departments can directly impact team performance. While championships are won on the court, keeping athletes healthy often begins long before tip-off.

The Knicks' rise back to championship contention highlights something Athletic Trainers have always known: availability is one of the most valuable assets any team can have. Check out the full story here
