Fowlerville High School Athletic Trainer Martha Munsell has been honored as the Secondary Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Michigan Athletic Trainers’ Society (MATS).

A dedicated member of the Fowlerville community and its athletics program for two decades, Munsell previously received MATS’ Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2020.

MATS, which works to advance the profession across Michigan, presents this award to certified athletic trainers who have served in the state for at least 10 years and have demonstrated significant contributions to the profession. Nominees must be current MATS members and hold a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.

“Martha is not only an outstanding athletic trainer she’s an asset to our entire community,” said Jeffrey Finney, Fowlerville’s Athletic Director. “The bonds she has built with everyone who has had the privilege to work with her are irreplaceable. As an athletic director, I am very blessed to work alongside her every day and will continue to learn from her. Martha is like family to me, and I imagine that all our student athletes over the past 20 years would feel the same way.”

A fourth-generation farmer at Munsell Farms, Munsell’s ties to the area run deep. She serves on the Livingston County Farm Bureau board and chairs its Promotion and Education Committee. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in athletic training from Michigan State University and is currently employed by MSU Health Care – Sports Medicine.

Through her role with MSU, Munsell also supports local athletic directors, athletic trainers, and coaches by providing CPR training and helping develop emergency action plans (EAPs). These plans are crucial in ensuring quick, effective responses to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heat illness, or traumatic injury—making her expertise invaluable to Fowlerville Community Schools.
