Initially set on becoming a physical therapist, Rourke shifted her focus to athletic training after a suggestion from a peer, a decision she never looked back on.
“I had never heard of an Athletic Trainer before that point. But I started taking classes, fell in love, and knew I did not want to continue on to physical therapy.”
Nominated by her colleagues and Allen Park athletic director Jimmy Victor, Rourke expressed her appreciation with humility:
“I am very humbled by the award. There are so many Athletic Trainers who are deserving of this award.”
Her journey began with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Grand Valley State University, followed by a Master of Arts in Health Professions Education from Michigan State University. Rourke maintains her certification with 25 hours of continuing education annually.
Rourke’s colleagues speak highly of her dedication and support. Sarah Cheatham noted:
“Meaghan has been a coworker who has continuously advocated for Athletic Trainers.”
Beyond her professional life, Rourke enjoys traveling to visit her nieces, reading, and volunteering at her church. Her long-standing impact at Allen Park High School is evident, with Victor praising her:
"She ensures our students get the best care possible, often sacrificing personal time to attend to and support our student athletes. Her positive influence extends far beyond the realm of athletic training (and) she helps shape the character and values of our young athletes.”
Reflecting on her career, Rourke cherishes state championships and the growth of her athletes but also when they come back from serious injuries.
“Watching them return to the field is always a great moment.”
