Joe Holstedt, the Eugene Emeralds' Athletic Trainer, may prefer the background, but his impact is undeniable, from the diamond to the locker room.
Despite his initial hesitance to step into the spotlight, his story reveals a depth of character and dedication.
"You want to write a story about me?"
Holstedt's journey to the Emeralds is as colorful as his personality. A former Army infantryman and self-described "pain in the ass," his early years were marked by mischief and a rebellious spirit.
His decision to join the Army was pivotal, helping him channel his intelligence and energy into meaningful pursuits.
"I was a nightmare… and I joined the Army almost out of spite."
Post-military, Holstedt's academic achievements at the Universities of Nebraska and South Dakota laid the groundwork for his career in sports medicine, leading him to roles in independent baseball and D-1 football before joining the Emeralds.
His approach to Athletic Training is deeply influenced by his military experience, focusing not just on physical health but also on the personal development of the players.
"These guys have a lot going on, from organizational demands to families to injuries."
In the dynamic world of minor league baseball, Holstedt's days are long and varied, filled with everything from taping and stretching athletes to handling unexpected tasks like MRI pickups.
Yet, his philosophy remains consistent: to support and develop players, helping them navigate the challenges of professional sports. Holstedt drew a parallel between his past role in the Army and his current mission with the Emeralds:
"I just want to help these guys achieve their dreams, any way I can."
His unique blend of toughness and care ensures that while he might operate behind the scenes, his influence is pivotal to the team's success.
