"Missouri State has been very proactive. The school has taken the initiative versus waiting for the universe and the NCAA to make it a requirement and so on. I really appreciate the university for that approach."
The program not only addresses a wide array of mental health needs, including crisis intervention and eating disorders, but also places a strong emphasis on the involvement of Athletic Trainers.
Athletic Trainers at Missouri State are crucial in identifying athletes who may be struggling and need further psychological support. They are trained to recognize signs of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues among athletes, facilitating early intervention.
Dr. Freeman, who joined the Missouri State Athletics full-time staff in October 2023 and has served the university in various capacities for 13 years, also focuses on concussion protocols and the oversight of clinical assignments for MSU's Psychology and Sports Psychology students.
"Ultimately, my goal, regardless of what happens around them in terms of their performance on the field, is that they're OK with themselves."
Athletes are referred to the mental health services through a comprehensive system where coaches, Athletic Trainers, and even fellow athletes are vigilant in monitoring their peers.
This system is complemented by annual questionnaires that probe into various aspects of the athletes' mental health, allowing the staff to tailor interventions effectively.
The mental health program at Missouri State also includes the option for athletes to seek help through the university’s counseling center or via telehealth services, ensuring privacy and comfort.
Dr. Freeman and his team, as well as the Athletic Trainers, are dedicated to fostering an environment where athletes feel safe to discuss their struggles, aiming to destigmatize mental health issues within the athletic community.
Missouri State's proactive stance in enhancing athlete mental health services is setting a commendable precedent in collegiate sports. This approach not only helps athletes cope with immediate challenges but also prepares them for healthier futures, both in and out of the sports arena.
