More Than Treatment: Inside a School Where ATs Shape Care and Connection

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News Stories

At the Latin School of Chicago, the Athletic Trainers’ Office has grown into a vital hub for student-athlete health, recovery, and support.

Screenshot 2026-02-09 091027With more than 40 Upper School teams and a full slate of Middle School athletics, the school recently expanded the program by adding a second Athletic Trainer, Ari Adrahtas, to work alongside longtime Athletic Trainer Jessie Heider. Athletic Director Katie Johnson explained the need clearly:

“We only had one athletic trainer that was responsible for covering and supporting all of them. It just wasn’t sustainable.”

The added support means quicker access to care and more consistent coverage for athletes across all programs. But the impact goes far beyond physical treatment.

Heider emphasized creating a supportive environment, saying her goal is:“to always provide a safe space for students to feel heard and seen,” while Adrahtas focuses on whole-person care, noting the importance of supporting athletes “holistically.”

Students feel that difference every day. Varsity golfer Thomas Axel shared:

“They make sure I’m actually taking care of my body,” highlighting how even short visits can make a meaningful impact.

The office has also become a welcoming space where students can connect, recover, and feel supported throughout their athletic journeys.
