The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) has named Nathan Morrison of Kansas Wesleyan University the 2024-25 Head Athletic Trainer of the Year and Ryo Nakazono of McPherson College the Staff Athletic Trainer of the Year.
Both awards celebrate Athletic Trainers who demonstrate excellence not only in their clinical roles but also through involvement in campus life, conference initiatives, and promotion of the profession.
“I am very gracious to receive this award,” said Morrison, who serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at KWU. “This recognition reflects the collective efforts of the individuals I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.”
Morrison oversees care for 24 sports and assists with student insurance for the entire campus.
Miguel Paredes, KWU’s Athletic Director, praised Morrison’s leadership:
“Nathan continues to do a great job navigating challenges and coordinating health efforts across the university.”
Nakazono, who joined McPherson in 2021, covers eight varsity teams and recently earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
“I am truly honored,” said Nakazono. “I will continue striving to provide the highest quality healthcare for our student-athletes.”
His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed.
“Ryo has gone above and beyond,” said Head Athletic Trainer Phil Schoenwetter. “Completing his doctorate while managing multiple teams shows his incredible commitment.”
McPherson Athletic Director Josh Daume added,
