NATM Spotlight: Danielle Vogt’s Quick Action Helps Save a Life on the Field

As National Athletic Training Month comes to a close, stories like this are a powerful reminder of the real impact Athletic Trainers have, far beyond the sidelines.
During a softball game at Patriots Park in Allentown, Pa., a field umpire, later identified as Mark Weil, suddenly collapsed after suffering a heart attack.
In a moment where every second mattered, Dieruff High School Athletic Trainer Danielle Vogt quickly stepped in to help.
Working alongside coaches Brianna Knipe and Jeff Appleman, Vogt helped stabilize the situation until emergency responders arrived.
Reports also noted that a pregnant nurse in the stands immediately began chest compressions, providing critical early care before Vogt reached the scene, highlighting how teamwork played a key role in saving Weil’s life.
Thanks to the swift response from everyone involved, Weil regained consciousness and was transported to a local hospital, where he is reportedly recovering well.
Vogt, who is employed by St. Luke’s University Health Network, exemplified the preparation and calm decision-making that define Athletic Trainers in emergency situations.
It’s a moment no one expects, but one every Athletic Trainer is trained for.
As we wrap up National Athletic Training Month, this story serves as a fitting reminder: Athletic Trainers aren’t just there for injuries and recovery—they are often the first line of care when lives are on the line. Story available here!
