NC High School Athletic Trainer Helps Save Official During Game
An Athletic Trainer and the football staff at Williams High School are being praised for their effective response after an official, Matthew Reid, suffered a seizure during a junior varsity game at Burlington Memorial Stadium in North Carolina.
Taylor Howlett, who has been the Athletic Trainer with Williams since January, led the emergency response until paramedics arrived. Howlett explained that he and others guided Reid to the ground and monitored his vitals during the two-minute seizure:
“He became nonverbal.”
Elbert Lassiter, a football officiating booking agent who was in attendance, praised the quick actions of the staff:
“The Athletic Trainer and the others did an amazing job. Everything worked the way it should have worked.”
Reid, a relatively new official from Burlington, quickly recovered and was not transported to the hospital. His condition improved on-site with the help of acquaintances who arrived soon after.
Todd Davis, athletics director for the Alamance-Burlington School System, emphasized the importance of having trained professionals like Howlett present:
“The fact that we have those people who are knowledgeable and know what to do is huge.”
After the incident, the game resumed with a replacement official. Despite the scary situation, Lassiter commended the staff:
“Everything turned out as good as it could.”
