NYC Councilman Advocates for Athletic Trainers in High Schools to Enhance Student Safety
In an initiative aimed at bolstering student safety, New York City Councilman David Carr (R-Mid-Island) is spearheading a campaign to implement a pilot program that places Athletic Trainers in high schools across the city. This proposal, targeting two schools in each borough, seeks to prevent sports-related injuries and emergencies among student athletes.
The push for this program is driven by a growing concern for the wellbeing of high school athletes, underscored by tragic incidents such as the death of Curtis High School's defensive lineman, Miles Kirkland-Thomas, during a 2014 pre-season football practice.
The recent on-field cardiac arrest of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin in January 2023 has further galvanized support for enhanced medical supervision at athletic events. Dr. John Reilly, a Staten Island orthopedics specialist and advocate for the program, stated:
"Athletic Trainers are crucial for the health and safety of student athletes."
He highlighted the lack of ATs in the New York City Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), emphasizing the increased risk of injury and delayed recovery for athletes without professional oversight.
The bipartisan support for the initiative includes endorsements from Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella (R) and other key local politicians like Minority Leader Joseph Borelli (R - South Shore) and Council Member Kamillah Hanks (D - North Shore). The proposal has been formally addressed to NYC Department of Education Chancellor David Banks, among other significant city officials.
Councilman Carr expressed confidence in the widespread backing of the measure, citing the city's improved fiscal outlook as an opportune time to prioritize student safety.
"We wanted to make sure money was set aside for our students. The fact that this is supported by my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and every borough in the city demonstrates its necessity."
The proposal illustrates a united effort to ensure the physical well-being of New York City's high school athletes, setting a precedent for other cities to follow.
