Ohio State’s Doug Calland Honored with Big Ten Athletic Medicine Award

Ohio State Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sport Performance Doug Calland has been recognized with one of the Big Ten’s top honors in athletic medicine.
Calland was named the recipient of the 2026 Doug Boersma Distinguished Big Ten Athletic Medicine Award, an honor recognizing exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to advancing athlete healthcare throughout the conference.
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Calland has become widely respected for both his leadership and mentorship within Athletic Training and sports medicine.
During his time at Ohio State, he has helped reshape the university’s approach to athlete care by integrating athletic training, strength and conditioning, and sport psychology into a more collaborative system.
His impact extends beyond administration as well. Calland continues to mentor future professionals in athletic medicine while also serving as a clinical course instructor within Ohio State’s School of Allied Medical Professions.
In addition to his work on campus, Calland remains active nationally through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association, and the NFL/Collegiate Athletic Trainer Committee.
The award itself was created to honor the legacy of former Purdue sports medicine leader Doug Boersma and is presented annually following nominations and review by Big Ten medical professionals.
For Athletic Trainers across the conference and beyond, Calland’s recognition reflects decades of dedication to athlete care and professional leadership. See the full story here!
