Patriot League Athletic Trainers Strengthen Skills Through Hands-On Learning Experience

Athletic Trainers from across the Patriot League recently came together for a unique educational experience designed to enhance their understanding of sports medicine, injury care, and athlete health.
Hosted by the Venel Institute and the Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, the event served as the kickoff to the Patriot League's annual Athletic Training meeting.
Participants had the opportunity to observe cadaver dissections of knees, shoulders, wrists, hands, feet, and ankles while learning directly from orthopedic surgeons about anatomy, injury mechanisms, and surgical procedures.
The hands-on environment allowed Athletic Trainers to gain a deeper understanding of the structures they work with every day. Lafayette College Director of Sports Medicine Matt Bayly compared the experience to studying an owner's manual for a car, providing insights that go beyond textbooks and computer models.
In addition to the anatomical training, Athletic Trainers attended educational sessions on topics such as suicide risk recognition, management strategies, and Achilles tendon rehabilitation. The event highlighted how the profession continues to evolve, with Athletic Trainers playing an increasingly important role in both physical and mental health care.
Lehigh University's Director of Sports Medicine Marco Giuliani emphasized the value of building relationships with colleagues across the conference. Those connections can prove invaluable when coordinating care for student-athletes and sharing best practices.
The gathering also reinforced the strong partnerships between Athletic Trainers and team physicians. By learning together and collaborating regularly, both groups are better equipped to provide comprehensive care for athletes.
As Athletic Training continues to grow and expand, opportunities like this help ensure that clinicians remain current on the latest techniques, research, and approaches to athlete care while strengthening the network of professionals supporting student-athletes across the Patriot League.
