Pietra Sweeney Returns to BU to Care for Student Athletes as an Athletic Trainer

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesAfter years of being a student athlete at Boston University (BU), Pietra Sweeney (Sargent '19, '21) has come full circle, returning as an Athletic Trainer with Student Health Services.

Pietra SweeneyIn August 2023, Sweeney joined a team of 24 athletic trainers responsible for the care of approximately 1,100 student athletes who play on BU's 24 varsity teams and 34 club sports programs. Her team also provides care for ROTC students.

As a former captain of the BU women’s soccer team, Sweeney has firsthand experience with the critical role Athletic Trainers play in keeping athletes healthy. She recalled the individualized injury prevention and rehab plans she and her teammates received:

"I trusted them with my life."

Now, she’s on the other side, offering the same care she once benefited from.

Sweeney always knew she wanted to work in healthcare and help people. After earning an undergraduate degree in health sciences from BU’s Sargent College, she went on to complete her master’s degree in athletic training.

She says that being a former student athlete gives her a unique perspective and advantage in her current role.

"I think literally having been in their same shoes just helps me to connect with my patients more and empathize with them more. In some situations it allows me to just better treat them."

Her role extends beyond helping athletes recover from injuries. Sweeney also focuses on long-term health and injury prevention, guiding students to avoid future injuries.

One of the highlights of her job, she says, is working alongside the Athletic Trainers who once helped her as a student athlete.

"It’s really cool and rewarding."

Sweeney loves the constant growth that comes with the profession.

"There’s always room to continue to learn and to grow, to develop your skills."
