Pirates' Athletic Trainer Representing NL at All-Star Game
Well, we shared a story about the AL Athletic Trainer at the All-Star game, so it's only fair that we do the same for National League!
For many Pirates fans, seeing Tony Leo on the field often signals an injury, as he rushes to aid players with manager Derek Shelton. However, Leo's presence at the upcoming All-Star weekend in Arlington, Texas, will celebrate his multi-decade MLB career.
Leo, along with the Diamondbacks’ Ryan DiPanfilo, will serve as the National League’s athletic trainers for the 2024 All-Star Game.
“I think all of us grow up watching the All-Star Game as kids and think how neat it would be to partake in it. And growing up, being a Pirates fan and getting to go and represent the Pittsburgh Pirates at the All-Star Game, along with all the other trainers and work with all those players, is pretty exciting.”
Born and raised in Salem, Ohio, Leo’s passion for baseball grew during frequent summer trips to Three Rivers Stadium. His high school interest in medicine, coupled with a seminar at the University of Pittsburgh, led him to athletic training.
“It’s really when I learned what an Athletic Trainer was. I was like, ‘Wait a minute, you can do this and work directly with athletes? That sounds a lot better to me.’”
After attending Bowling Green and majoring in sports management, Leo left his resume at the Minnesota Twins’ spring training complex, which led to a full-time job in 1998. Leo spent 23 years with the Twins, building relationships and gaining experience that led to his current role with the Pirates.
Leo’s upcoming All-Star appearance is a testament to his dedication. He and his family, who live in Schaumburg, Illinois, will head to Texas for the festivities. Leo is particularly excited about sharing the Home Run Derby with his daughter.
“To be a part of it is going to be pretty exciting."
Leo’s journey from a passionate fan to a celebrated professional underscores the fulfillment of a lifelong dream and a memorable career milestone.
