For five decades, David “Poppy” Sanderson has been a cornerstone of Trenton Central High School—an institution within an institution.
“People always say ‘Pop, when are you retiring?’” the 73-year-old joked. “I’m in the fourth quarter, but the officials stopped the clock somewhere along the line.”
Sanderson’s journey spans far beyond Trenton. From training at the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp to founding the nonprofit Education Outweighs Them All, he’s championed both athletic and academic excellence.
He’s treated NBA stars, mentored young Athletic Trainers, and uplifted underserved students through football camps and education initiatives.
“He is the best,” said Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy. “No one has had a broader impact on folks in the city than him.”
Now celebrating his 50th year, Sanderson shows no signs of slowing down. His autobiography, 400 Chambers Street; Sports and Politics; 50 Plus, promises to chronicle his remarkable path.
As his longtime friend Greg Grant said, “He is Trenton, and he is Trenton High.”
