Preparing for the Worst: Enhancing Emergency Readiness at Ohio High Schools!
OhioHealth Athletic Trainers are dedicated to ensuring student athletes receive the best possible care and recovery support if injured on the field. To achieve this, they engage in annual training sessions with local first responders to prepare for various emergency scenarios.
On July 29, OhioHealth ATs collaborated with Springfield Township EMS at Ontario High School to practice treating trauma injuries on the football field.
Athletic Trainer Tyler Sipes led the session, guiding trainers through multiple situations, including cutting through pads and loading athletes onto spine boards.
"This is an important part of our practice for us every year. We are the first line of medical personnel that gets on the field when an athlete gets hurt, so it’s important for us to know what we’re doing."
As the exclusive sports medicine provider for Ontario Local Schools, OhioHealth is committed to meeting the needs of student athletes year-round. The school system will benefit from two full-time Athletic Trainers and a range of medical services, including CPR and first aid courses for coaches, concussion baseline testing, wrestling weight assessments, and pre-participation sports physicals.
Lisa Parker, associate manager of OhioHealth Sports Medicine, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership:
"OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and our Sports Medicine Team are excited to bring our quality program to the Ontario School District."
With over 180 athletic trainers at more than 90 schools, OhioHealth’s program continues to expand since its inception in 2006.
As Ontario High School gears up for its first football game on August 23, Sipes will be on the sideline, ready to provide expert care and support to the athletes.
