Quick Action Saves Young Student Athlete
In a remarkable act of heroism, two Rochester City School District employees, Jushawn Rucker, a school safety officer, and Dave DiPasquale, an Athletic Trainer, saved the life of a 15-year-old boy who suffered a cardiac arrest during a junior varsity basketball game at John James Audubon School.
Rucker and DiPasquale, positioned at opposite ends of the gym, leaped into action upon seeing the student collapse.
They deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) and administered a life-saving electric shock. Rucker recounted:
"The situation really elevated when I hooked him up to the AED machine and it said 'shock advised.' That was the wake-up call for me."
Their quick response and coordinated efforts led to the student regaining consciousness and being taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Reflecting on the emotional aftermath, Rucker shared:
"We heard that first voice, it was like a miracle. I was elated. Everybody was emotional."
Despite being hailed as heroes, both men humbly insisted they were merely doing their jobs. Superintendent Carmine Peluso, however, commended them for their heroic actions. Rucker highlighte their teamwork during the critical moment:
"We were working together perfectly."
DiPasquale emphasized the emotional connection they have with the students:
"We were blessed to be there... These are our babies. I treat everyone like they’re my own."
Rucker later discovered that the student he helped save was his best friend's nephew, adding a personal dimension to the already intense experience.
The game was halted following the incident, and the varsity game scheduled afterward was also canceled. Peluso praised the men for their readiness to act in an emergency.
"Right place, right time works when you have the right people ready to act. They're heroes."
This incident underscores the importance of quick thinking and preparedness in potentially life-threatening situations and highlights how the actions of dedicated individuals can make a significant difference in critical moments.
