What started as a routine pickup basketball game quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency—and a powerful reminder of why preparation matters.
Fortunately, Steinbach was surrounded by staff trained in CPR and AED use—a requirement within Villanova Athletics.
As 911 was called, head Athletic Trainer Dan Erickson rushed to apply the AED. Just 90 seconds later, the device delivered a shock that restored Steinbach’s heartbeat.
“I wouldn’t be talking to you otherwise,” Steinbach said, crediting the recent CPR and AED training staff had completed just weeks earlier.
Steinbach had no prior history of heart issues. In fact, he had gone on a four-mile hike the day before. The sudden nature of the event underscores how quickly cardiac emergencies can occur—and how critical immediate response can be.
After several days in the hospital and months of recovery, Steinbach returned to coach the full 2025 season. Now equipped with an implantable defibrillator, he says the experience has changed his perspective.
“It’s just made me appreciate being able to do my job,” he said.
