Andy Wilson, a longtime Athletic Trainer at Harker Heights High School who retired in December, will be inducted into the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Honor on Sunday night.

This honor places him alongside his father, Al Wilson, who was inducted in 2018. Growing up as the son of the legendary Killeen Athletic Trainer, whose name graces the Kangaroos’ fieldhouse, Andy was inspired to follow in his father's footsteps from an early age.

Thanks to his father's industry connections, Andy experienced the world of professional sports up close, witnessing great athletes like George Gervin and Moses Malone receiving treatment.

"It was awe-inspiring as a kid, and it helped create a desire to pursue a career in the medical field."

After three decades as a trainer, highlighted by a 24-year stint at Harker Heights, Andy is receiving one of the profession’s ultimate accolades.

“It is just a special feeling to share an honor like that with my dad. If this is the only one I am ever inducted into, though, I’m still more thrilled than I could ever express.”

Following the football season’s completion in December, Andy retired as the only head Athletic Trainer in Harker Heights’ history. He mentored numerous student trainers, referring to them as his "kids."

“For them to think of me as being that important to try and fill in for her dad is extremely humbling. That is an even bigger honor than just about anything I can think of.”

A product of Killeen ISD, Andy spent six years as Copperas Cove’s Athletic Trainer before joining his father at Killeen, where Al Wilson served an astounding 57 years. Andy then took the role at Harker Heights for the next 24 years, creating lasting relationships and memories.

Reflecting on his career, Andy fondly recalled winning the football district championship in Harker Heights' opening season.

“At that moment, I learned anything can happen. That was an extremely special game and a special season."

Now, another memorable experience is unfolding for Andy with his induction into the TSATA Hall of Honor, where he will assume a well-deserved spot alongside his father.

“He has always been very supportive of me, and he is humbled to share this honor with me. I never saw myself getting something like this even though I had the dream of it happening. This is really just out of the blue, and I am honored."
