At most high school sporting events, the focus is on the players—but behind the scenes, Athletic Trainers and their student assistants are essential to athlete safety.

In Texas, that work was front and center at this year’s Greater Houston Athletic Training Society (GHATS) Student Athletic Training Workshop, hosted for the first time by Goose Creek CISD.

Held in April at Goose Creek Memorial High School, the free workshop welcomed over 1,100 student trainers from more than 50 high schools, making it the largest student athletic training event in the nation.

More than 200 professionals from colleges and medical organizations also participated.

“Our end goal with the conference is to introduce the students to the diverse settings that they can work in as an athletic trainer,” said Bryanna Kemp, Goose Creek Memorial’s Athletic Trainer. “We had professionals who represented the industrial, entrepreneurial and professional settings, as well as someone from NASA.”

The day featured hands-on learning like the “Stop the Bleed” course, taping competitions, and a Life Flight helicopter landing.

“When they see how motivated others are... it encourages them to dig deeper and increase their skills,” added Sterling High School trainer Leah Silva.

GHATS President Kim Faterkowski praised the Goose Creek CISD team—Savanna Hurst, Brandy Jones, Bryanna Kemp, and Leah Silva—for their outstanding effort and hospitality.

“It was an incredible honor to host,” said Kemp. “I’m already looking forward to attending next year’s workshop at Grand Oaks High School.”
