This School Sets New Standard with Mandatory Cardiac Screenings for Sports
In response to a significant rise in cardiac abnormalities among athletes, Foothill College has implemented mandatory cardiac screenings for all students participating in sports. Foothill Athletic Trainer Michelle Schukraft has stated:
"Sudden cardiac death is the No. 1 killer for student-athletes, especially up to the age of 25, and nobody wants to go through that."
The screenings, which include an EKG, family history review, and CPR training, aim to detect heart issues early and provide necessary care.
Partnering with the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation, the screenings are offered at no additional cost to students, making Foothill the first community college in California to require such screenings.
Foothill’s initiative addresses a gap in medical care for junior college athletes, often overlooked compared to high school and NCAA levels. Foothill Athletic Trainer Alex Pacheco emphasized:
“This medical care should be universal and across all levels.”
Schukraft noted a "massive uptick" in cardiac issues, with four athletes experiencing abnormalities in the past six months, three of whom required overnight care. She remarked:
"In my 17 previous years, I may have had four abnormalities total."
By leading in cardiac care, Foothill aims to ensure student-athletes receive the highest level of care and awareness, preventing potential tragedies.
This proactive approach allows athletes to recognize signs of cardiac problems and seek help earlier. Schukraft added:
“We’re able to get them the care that they need before it does turn fatal.”
Foothill’s mission is clear: to protect their athletic community and set a new standard in student-athlete health care. Check out the full story here!
