UConn's Athletic Trainer Balances National Championship Aspirations with Family Milestone

Articles for Athletic Trainers and News StoriesWhile you were busy picking out your NCAA men's or women's basketball tourney brackets, one particlar Athletic Trainer was probably picking out baby names.

James Doran ATC for UConnJames Doran, the esteemed AT for the UConn men's basketball team, faces a unique challenge as the Huskies pursue another illustrious trip to the Final Four.

With a tenure decorated with three national championships and four Final Four appearances over 19 years, Doran's expertise has been pivotal. However, as UConn aims for glory once again, they will navigate the tournament's critical stages without their seasoned Athletic Trainer.

But for a great reason...

Doran's wife, Annie, is 37 weeks pregnant, eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first child, a daughter. Doran, committed to his dual roles, joined the team for its initial round at Barclays Center and plans to be with them in Boston for the East Regionals, contingent on a victory over Northwestern and the baby's timing.

"It's the baby's call, at this point."

The couple's child is due around April 8, coinciding with the NCAA championship game. This serendipitous timing has led to a heartfelt decision: regardless of UConn's success, Doran will not accompany the team to Phoenix for the Final Four, prioritizing his family at this pivotal moment.

"She's due on the 8th, but the doctors told us last Tuesday that we're fully expecting her to come a week early. So, we're anticipating before the Final Four weekend."

To ensure the team's needs are met in his potential absence, UConn's men's soccer AT, Tavarus Ferguson, will accompany the team. Ferguson is prepared to step in, ensuring the Huskies receive top-notch care as they vie for the national title.

This development marks Annie's last tournament journey, having supported the team during the Big East Tournament. As the Dorans anticipate the arrival of their daughter, the possibility of her birth aligning with UConn's championship game has sparked playful speculation about her name.

Yet, Doran clarifies,

"No chance. It'll be either Evelyn, Madelyn, or Madison."

He shared their affection for the nicknames 'Maddy' and 'Evy.'

His journey encapsulates the spirit of the team and the broader athletic community, where achievements are celebrated both on the court and in life's most precious moments.

But... I've also got UConn winning it all in my bracket. And if they lose, I'm blaming Doran. Just sayin'.
