University of Tennessee at Chattanooga professor Dr. Marisa Colston has been recognized with one of the highest honors in Athletic Training, receiving the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association (SEATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
Colston has spent more than 25 years shaping the future of Athletic Training at UTC. Since joining the faculty in 1999, she has served in numerous leadership roles, including director of the Graduate Athletic Training program and head of the Department of Health and Human Performance.
Her impact extends far beyond campus. Throughout her career, Colston has received numerous honors, including the National Athletic Trainers' Association Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award, induction into the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society Hall of Fame, and several educator and administrator awards at both the state and regional levels.
UTC Professor Gary Wilkerson, who nominated Colston for the award, praised her unwavering commitment to students and the profession.
"Throughout the time I have known her, I have observed an exemplary commitment to the best interests of students, athletes and the athletic training profession that has never wavered," he said.
Despite the recognition, Colston says awards have never been her motivation.
"Students. The students," she said when asked what continues to inspire her after all these years.
Former student Dr. Lynette Carlson credits Colston for encouraging her to pursue a doctorate and helping shape her own career in Athletic Training education.
Today, Colston continues to teach, conduct research, and mentor future Athletic Trainers while remaining energized by advances in neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and the evolving future of healthcare.
Her latest honor serves as a reminder that some of the most impactful contributions to Athletic Training happen in classrooms, laboratories, and through decades of mentorship. Read more here!
