UTSA AT Rhodie Moss Champions Athletic Training Excellence
This summer, the UTSA Athletics department is shining a spotlight on the people behind the scenes who bolster the student-athlete experience.
In a recent interview featuring Rhodie Moss, Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, elaborated on the comprehensive role of Athletic Trainers in guiding athletes through their entire health cycle—from peak performance to recovery.
"It's the only profession in the allied health professions that we get to see our patient through the full cycle of health."
Moss describes UTSA's Sports Medicine unit as a pioneer in athletic health care, emphasizing their "hybrid medical model" which integrates resources from both UT Health and UTSA. This innovative structure allows a dedicated team of 15 full-time Athletic Trainers to focus intensively on individual sports, enhancing personalized care and fostering deep relationships with athletes.
"They’re dedicated to that sport year-round... It affords us the ability to be able to have an athletic trainer concentrate on one sport."
The commitment to excellence in UTSA's athletic training is also personal for Moss, who rejoined the institution after exploring diverse structures across the sports medicine landscape. His return to UTSA was influenced by the opportunity to impact the lives of young adults at a crucial stage, combined with a familial connection to San Antonio.
"Doing impactful work every single day... It’s very rewarding, all that work you do and to see somebody out there who is living up to their potential."
For those interested in the field of athletic training, Moss advises a foundation of interpersonal skills, learning ability, and teamwork.
UTSA provides a robust pathway for aspiring ATs, emphasizing a combination of educational rigor and hands-on experience critical for professional certification.
Moss invites everyone to delve deeper into the intricate world of athletic training and discover the intensive preparation and care that Athletic Trainers provide behind the scenes at UTSA.
