What Happens When an Athlete Says 'I’m Fine But the Data Says Otherwise?

You don't always have time to check Reddit. Sometimes, we do.

And every once in a while, we come across a conversation between Athletic Trainers that makes us stop scrolling.

The question wasn't about Sway. Or buying concussion technology.

It was about something much more familiar: the gray-area head injury.

An athlete takes a hit but denies symptoms. Maybe they say they felt something initially but now insist they're fine. The obvious cases may be easier to manage. It's the ones in between that can make sideline decision-making more difficult.

So the AT asked peers what they were doing to make those evaluations both efficient and effective—and whether anyone was using objective or electronic testing against an athlete's baseline.

That's when Sway Concussion entered the conversation.

One Athletic Trainer explained that their school moved to Sway Concussion for baseline, post-injury, and sideline testing.

They described using the approximately five-minute sideline assessment to add objective information alongside clinical findings such as VOMS and the athlete's reported symptoms.

Another Athletic Trainer responded that they were working on implementing Sway themselves after hearing from others about its ease of use.

And then another AT shared something that really caught our attention:

“Often times high school athletes have attested to symptoms on the app. While they were telling me no verbally.”

Think about that for a moment.

An athlete can be standing on the sideline telling an Athletic Trainer they're fine—while providing different information as they move through an assessment.

That doesn't make an app the decision-maker.

It does reinforce why having multiple sources of information can matter.

“SWAY has been my favorite tool.”

Another Athletic Trainer in the conversation described using Sway Concussion on the field for quick assessment and comparing the results against the athlete's baseline.

Their point wasn't that a Sway score determines whether an athlete has a concussion.

It was that objective information gives them another piece of the picture — particularly when an athlete is convinced they're ready to go back in.

That distinction matters.

Concussion assessment isn't about finding one test that provides the answer. Athletic Trainers consider symptoms, clinical examination, history, balance, cognitive performance, baseline information, observed behavior, and their own professional judgment.

Objective testing can provide another data point to consider alongside those findings.
