WSSU Athletic Trainer Credited with Saving Student-Athlete’s Life
As Winston-Salem State University prepares to honor its 2025 graduates, senior Nia James is using her moment in the spotlight to shine it on someone who never asked for it—Athletic Trainer John Lavender.
James, a former WSSU volleyball player, shared an emotional message on social media recounting how Lavender helped save her life in October 2022.
After suffering a devastating knee injury, James developed blood clots in her leg. When she later experienced severe chest pain, Lavender urged her to go to the emergency room—and insisted on a CT scan when doctors initially dismissed her symptoms.
That scan revealed life-threatening blood clots in all five lobes of her lungs.
“Without the persistence, care, and knowledge of John and the amazing @wssu_at staff, I would not be here preparing to walk the stage in 10 days,” James wrote. “Your impact is greater than you know.”
Lavender, who has served WSSU since 2013 and is now Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, stayed by James’ side through the night while her family was hours away.
Known for treating student-athletes like family, he responded on X:
“People always ask why I got into this profession. This is a perfect example of my why… I tell all our recruits/parents when their child comes to WSSU they become my child. I love my kids. I love my job.”
James’ story is more than a thank-you—it’s a testament to the life-saving care and deep bonds Athletic Trainers provide behind the scenes at HBCUs and beyond. More details here!
