Travelers took a look at Workers' Comp claims from 2015 to 2019 and discovered that 35% of injuries happened within the first year.
Overexertion — a mostly preventable workplace injury — was the most common cause at 29%.
Employees in construction, services, and transportation made up the highest percentage of claims and had the highest average of lost work days.
According to their report, Travelers stated:
“Our data underscores the importance of comprehensive onboarding and training programs for employees, particularly as we continue to navigate the challenges of COVID-19 and see many workers starting new jobs. While new employees are among the most vulnerable, many injuries sustained by employees of any tenure can often be prevented if the proper safety measures are in place.”
Because these injuries can happen at various locations throughout a large industrial company, or during late shifts, most employees with overexertion injuries are sent to a clinic or ER.
These off-site visits are often not needed, costly, and result in days away from work and comp claims.
