A recent survey by Sphera has shed light on the importance of safety for companies but also identified a gap between having a culture of safety and actually improving workplace safety processes. Nearly every business wants to keep their employees safe, healthy, happy, and productive. But moving from wanting something and making it happen are two different things and, according to the survey, only about 40% of companies have a well-defined roadmap to improve safety performance.
Sphera surveyed 350 risk, process safety, and health and safety professionals across the globe in manufacturing, energy, oil and gas, chemicals, construction, government, and professional services to learn more about key workplace safety trends, how safety culture has evolved, and what are the challenges to building a sustainable safety culture.
They found "a heightened focus on safety and building a culture of well-being within the workplace," but they also "found a deep disconnect between awareness and a well-defined roadmap to improve safety performance."
An overwhelming 75% of respondents said that safety is an ingrained part of their company culture. But only 40% had the roadmap that clearly defined the goals that would get them from Point A to Point B. Interestingly enough, they also stated that they have a large amount of asset data in place — 72% — but that they were not utilizing their data to manage risk.
In their report, they were asked about the challenges they faced in making safety improvements:
- 51% said limited resources
- 43% stated conflicting priorities
- 31% saw limited budgets as an obstacle
So, companies are working toward or have a healthy safety culture in place but there remains a difference in how companies are going from having an awareness of safety to actual processes that improve safety. According to the Sphera CEO, "We are still seeing a gap in how companies link safety and business performance, which highlights a need for a more holistic approach through data, software and expertise.”
