An Era Ends as AT Mike Matheny Retires After 37 Years at Ithaca College

Mike Matheny, the esteemed head athletic trainer at Ithaca College, has announced his retirement after a remarkable 37-year tenure.

Beginning in 1987, Matheny has been a cornerstone of the college's athletic department, contributing significantly to its development and success, including two national championship football teams.

He has seen through major facility enhancements and has educated over 560 athletic training majors, making a lasting impact through his role as a clinical faculty member.

Matheny’s commitment extended beyond training and teaching; his leadership was pivotal during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping develop comprehensive safety protocols for the campus.

His dedication to student well-being and athletic excellence was recognized nationally in 2021 when he was named the National Athletic Trainer of the Year.
