AT Damon Glass Champions Athletic Care for OKC Firefighters
In an innovative move that marks a first for the Oklahoma City Fire Department, Damon Glass has stepped into a groundbreaking role, blending his two decades of experience as an Athletic Trainer with his newfound mission to support over a thousand local firefighters.
Glass, who has an extensive background working with high school, college, and professional athletes, sees his role as crucial for the well-being of those who risk their lives for public safety.
"They need that extra passion for them because they are putting their lives on the line for us."
The Oklahoma City Fire Department's initiative to hire an Athletic Trainer reflects a growing awareness of the physical and mental demands placed on firefighters.
The Public Safety Athletic Trainers' Society is championing the cause nationwide, advocating for similar positions to be established in departments across the country. According to Miranda Zamora-Williams, president of the society, the benefits of such roles extend beyond the physical realm, providing much-needed mental support for first responders.
"There's not only a benefit physically, but there's a benefit mentally because these are people that take care of us all the time. To advocate for firefighters, police and EMS that they need this care. We're hoping that programs like this one set the tone."
With an eye toward expansion, Glass encourages other departments to seek partnerships with local universities or specialty clinics to introduce similar athletic training roles.
His vision is part of a larger effort to mitigate the high rates of injuries among firefighters, which have averaged 22,000 annually between 2017 and 2021, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
Glass is determined to make a significant impact, aspiring to provide Oklahoma City's firefighters with the same level of care typically reserved for professional athletes.
"For the guys that put their lives on the line for us, let's give them the top treatment like professional athletes get."
This pioneering initiative by the Oklahoma City Fire Department, with Damon Glass at the helm, not only promises to enhance the health and performance of its firefighters but also serves as a model for public safety departments nationwide.
By prioritizing the well-being of first responders, Oklahoma City is leading the charge in recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by those in the line of duty.
